in reply to ?! idiom in regex - que?
A zero-width negative look-ahead assertion. For example "/foo(?!bar)/" matches any occurrence of "foo" that isn't followed by "bar". Note however that look-ahead and look-behind are NOT the same thing. You cannot use this for look-behind.So the regex is capturing a digit, followed by 3 digits which are not followed by a digit, got it? Yape::Regex::Explain has the following to say about the regex
The regular expression: (?-imsx:(\d)(\d\d\d)(?!\d)) matches as follows: NODE EXPLANATION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (?-imsx: group, but do not capture (case-sensitive) (with ^ and $ matching normally) (with . not matching \n) (matching whitespace and # normally): ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ( group and capture to \1: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- \d digits (0-9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ) end of \1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ( group and capture to \2: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- \d digits (0-9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- \d digits (0-9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- \d digits (0-9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ) end of \2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (?! look ahead to see if there is not: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- \d digits (0-9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ) end of look-ahead ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ) end of grouping ----------------------------------------------------------------------
