Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

My sendmail in my perl script has worked for the last year and all of sudden it now gives me the following errors:
retrying in 1 seconds... retrying in 1 seconds... Problem! connect to smtp.mylocation failed (Unknown error) connect to smtp.mylocation failed connect to localhost failed (Unknown error) connect to localhost failed connect to localhost failed (Unknown error) no (more) retries!
I am running my script from my local NT workstation. I rebooted the workstation and still get same errors.
The sendmail was working late yesterday and all of sudden this morning it is not working. I didnt touch my browser smtp settings or my script so why is this happening? And I can send mail out from my NT workstation using my Microsoft Outlook.

Re: Mail smtp stopped working

This is a sendmail question, not a perl question, <delete>but you seem to use your localhost machine as the smtp server, if you don't actually have an smtp server on your local machine, this will not work.</delete>

You probably need to change your sendmail config.

Update: ok so you try to connect to 'smtp.mydomain' - assuming this is the right smtp server name, the most likely explenation is that your stmp server is malfunctioning. Contact your system administrator or fix the smtp server yourself.

Thank you Joost for your reply. You were correct in that it was my smtp and it was temporarily down. All my send mail messages starting coming up and working after it went back up.
