Under Windows, give the three-fingered salute (ctrl-alt-del) to get the task list; then choose "End Task" for the stalled task (usually bracketed with "Not Responding"). You may have to do this twice; if it's truly recalictrant, a window will come up in a few seconds asking if you want to kill with extreme prejudice. Of course, you do.
