meddle has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hey all, I have always wanted to make a "Star Trek house"... you know, the kind where you can say something like, "Computer: Lights on!" and it turns on the lights, etc. etc. Well, I want to take a tiny step in that direction, and although I don't plan on controlling my lights quite yet, I do want to control my computer-based stereo system, as well as a few other nifty trinkets. I was planning on doing the base code in Perl, but I need some kind of voice recognition software for Linux. Any ideas? If something doesn't exist already, is it possible to do it in Perl? (Sorry that this isn't COMPLETELY Perl related, but the concept is cool nonetheless!"

It exists, in Perl. Pay a visit to Mister House, where you'll find voice recognition and much, much more.

The Perl Journal (link to archived issue) also had a few articles about Mister House & X10 that may be a useful read for you...
