One more method (rounds down):     $int = sprintf "%d", $num;

Or this (rounds up for > .5):     $int = int $num + $num =~ /\.[5-9]/;

    Or, to round to the nearest integer: 
    $int = sprintf "%d", ( $num + 0.5 ) ;
