Having just read this I decided I wanted to cast my vote and tracked all the way back to the top to click the radio button, then all the way to the bottom to click "VOTE".

Okay - not to bad if your looking at the post on its own (ctl-shift-home, click, cntl-shift-end, click) - but when your reading a long thread and want to cast your vote for several posts, the backing up can be a pain.

I've no idea how difficult it would be to implement this, but it would be useful (IMO) to have a duplicate "VOTE" button at the top of the thread and/or have the radio buttons at the bottom of each post instead of the top.

After all. We normally read the post before voting don't we?

In that case, it would be useful to have a vote button near each node eligible to be voted upon. Actually, that doesn't strike me as being especially useful.

On a slightly different tangent, I'd like to have a "you had N votes but you spent N+M" warning every time I ++ed a number of posts in a thread, but didn't have enough votes to ++ all of them. I don't particularly mind voting up the first posts I came to, but it'd be nice to have the opportunity to pick which posts are most immediately deserving.

Definitely agree with that one - I'd say the most logical change would be to simply have the vote radio buttons at the bottom of a note. I wish it were actually possible with CSS in the User settings, the way you can put the nodelets bar on the left side of the screen if you so desire, so that it would not require divine intervention - but alas..

My main problem with the radio buttons being at the bottoms of nodes is that they would then fall close to the heading of the next node. They look more like a heading element than a body element so it becomes very easy to see them as being attached to the heading of the next node rather than attached to the bottom of the body of the previous node, no matter what reasonable amount and type of "separation" you try to place bewteen them or explanatory text beside them.

If someone really wants to have this feature implemented, then they need to work up some example mark-up that won't lead to lots of confusion about which node is being voted on.

I'd be more likely to support placing the vote buttons within the bottom of the "[reply]" bar beside notes (and at the bottom of the first node displayed, above the "comment on" link -- probably with some extra footer information added just for the added separation value).

It also adds complication and load since I'd prefer to keep the reputation at the top so we'd have to have two checks per node displayed and more complex code (or duplicated code).

But if the Radio was next to the vote button, would this not make it easier for vote whoring?

They probably just do that now. But I would probably vote against it.

Eh? Two points: votebots of course. Also, whoever is "vote whoring" (a horribly ineffective way of gaining XP, if that's your aim) is probably determined enough to not even care. An annoyance (not saying that the current setup is - merely stating a rule) is not a deterrent.

Just as a note, this came up before. I think it's a good idea and is probably trivial to implement.
