I believe hte question was not about the variable,
but about the acctually program "rdate" that you
execute.
The poster points out that it doesn't exist on his
Mandrake or Cygwin systems, ...
I find it on Solaris machines, but not FreeBSD ...

I don't find it on any of my non-Solaris machines which include AIX, Digital Unix, and RH Linux.

RH 7.x is what I use...
i didn't think to check the origins of rdate...
man rdate:
rdate - connects to an RFC 868 time server over a TCP/IP network, printing the returned time and/or setting the system clock.
