Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hi. i'm trying to fork to escape a gui freezing while its processing in the background but when i run the program i get the error Bizarre SvTYPE 253 at ftp.pl line 212. and line 212 is

if ($pid = fork) {
#do stuff
}

i'm running perl 5.8.0-rc3 (i've also tested on activeperl 5.6.1.631 and 633) with all the right flags for forking and threads uncommented when i compiled it, on windows 2000 sp2.

any ideas?

    Please create a small program that exhibits the bug. An as small program as possible. And use the perlbug command to report this problem. Perhaps if you are very, very fast, a fix will be included before 5.8.0, but it's more likely you will have to wait until 5.8.1.
