AMK has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I am quite new to Perl but have a little experience. If anyone can help me with this particular problem. I have an auto mail set up for a client. The problem I am having is when trying to send mail to an aol or hotmail account I receive the -6 error code. Which is "local user $to unknown on host $smtp_server". Any ideas on how to get around this. I am not having problems with any other e-mail accounts.

Can you send email using sendmail manually? I.e. by running sendmail binary from shell. If not then it is hardly Perl problem but sendmail configuration issue.

IlyaM is correct. I was able to send to my hotmail account.

    That's not a Perl error.

It's not even an error that indicates no mail is send to AOL or hotmail. It's an error that indicates mail was attempted to be delivered, but it was refused, for the reason indicated in the error message.

I'm baffled why you think it's a Perl error. It's probably not even a sendmail error. It more looks like a data error to me. Are you sure you are actually mailing to the address you think you are mailing to?
