I'm new here and apparently don't have the login procedure correct.

I see the (expected) 'welcome' screen and my login appears to be recorded, but when I post a new message, it ends up having been posted by "Anonymous Monk" rather than by my login name.

The other curious thing is that my login name appears for a while in the "Other Users" list, but then in a few minutes it disappears from the list.

There must be some obvious thing that I'm missing about how to log in correctly. Advice appreciated, including by e-mail if you'd prefer.

    There's a detailed answer to the question at Login without a password. Here's a summary:

    First, do you have cookies enabled in your browser?

    Another possibility is that you logged on, selected a perm cookie, and then later logged out. Logging out does not remove your name from the list of users. Rather, it removes the cookie (temp or perm). Your name will appear in the list of other users for a few minutes after your last action. Thus you might not be listed as logged in when you are in fact just making a lengthy post.

    I think these are the most common reasons--the term 'log out' doesn't completly suggest the consequences. If neither of these is the answer, try seeing Corion's reply to the aformentioned node.

      Indeed I have cookies off...not just off, but blocked (along with durned near everything else) via a
      block-everything-under-the-sun program. I'll change the filtration.

    Make sure you are not running any cookie crunching software (Guard Dog, Watchdog, etc). These programs remove the cookies a few seconds after creation. Their belief is that you only need the cookie for the login procedure.

    Another thing I've noticed that can screw up logins is when the system clock gets set to something really strange (something on my system periodically sets my clock to the year 2020, which kills my cookies)

      The perm cookie is set to expire in 2010. I don't know much about cookies, but I imagine if your system clock were only sent to 2009, your login would be unaffected.
