You might take a look at POE, and particular POE::Wheel::Run, both to have a timeout, and also to parallelize the tasks easily.

      There's an option to have a default thing to prepend your message topics with. merlyn has • in his which used to become • but is broken now.

        In my (mythical) copious spare time, I'm planning on writing a global substitutor that turns all •'s into real bullets, as soon as I figure out how to enter that character on my keyboard, and also as part of a string in an LWP post. It was so much easier to just type amp-b-u-l-l-semi.
