Correct, that is a 5.6 thing. I really wish people here would stick with -w in examples to ensure there is no confusion, since noone seems to comment 'This is for 5.6 and above only' when they do it.

    My Apologies.
Since upgrading to 5.6 I have switched from -w to -W and I forgot that -W was new to 5.6. I will try to remember to use -w in future posts.

perhaps some of these folks are newbies who have only ever used 5.6 and don't know the difference?

p.s. i wasn't referring to Adam in this case, simply addressing KM's assertion that a lot of people seem to make the 5.6 assumption.

That should be a poll, how many people have ONLY used 5.6 :) It may also be (and in some cases has been) from folks who are not newbies. If someone shows -I on the command line, I doubt they are a newbie (from my experience with newbies)

Thank you for your vote of confidence.
However I am unconcerned if someone thinks I am a newbie. I have only been programming in Perl for about a year and I am far from an expert. Even on subjects where I might be considered an expert, I prefer to think that I am not... for there is always more to learn.
