I agree with your assessment that it's limited in application. But as you said, if you have any functions like this, then you will have trouble. I know the code I'm working on isn't this way. I'm just too Lazy to go through and pick out each one of these little bundles of joy, seeing as how there's umpteen hundreds of them.

You'll note that Perl is set on Kill (-pi), not Stun (-pi.bak). I don't care about backups because it's all in CVS, so you can check through your changes before committing.
