For those of you who are prepared to be seduced by the dark side check out the Java Chatterbox written by N-Wing. Honestly it's pretty cool I'm just glad someone else got to write it.... (mind drifting back to last summer's algorithm animation research in Java and how I managed to use Perl in the project to increase my Happiness Quotient)

Friends don't let friends use Java products.

As they say, use the best tool for the job. If you just want to get text messages, use one of the Perl chatterbox clients. If you want to be able to view new messages, using a browser, without having to constantly reload, use Java, in an applet form. Sure, some browsers support PerlScript, but it hasn't caught on yet. (And would definately be better than (gag) VBScript.) Of course, if you want to try to write a PerlScript chatterbox client, nobody is stopping you...
