Demerphq said that his solution didn't work for making many modifications to one hash, because it creates a single chain of keys. This is why I use my solution:

for (@bigArray) {
  my $node = \\%hash;
  $node = \$$node->{$_} for split /\+/;
  $$node = 1;
}
