Second, could forcing the newbies through a tutorial of the site be a possible solution? Either a list of common mistakes made, or a page for each mistake if they are cut down to 2 or 3.

As a newbie, I just did not realize that the Categorized Q&A section was so highly regarded. I personally did not pick that up from the descriptions of the areas.
