Those of us who have been fans of The Perl Journal know that it was bought by SysAdmin magazine and recently ceased to exist. Well, it's coming back! It will be published as a monthly e-zine that you can subscribe to for $1/month. They need 3,000 subscribers to start publication, so if you're interested in seeing TPJ return, head over to their site and give them your e-mail address. They will e-mail you with more details in the next few days.

Re: The Perl Journal Returns

Sounds like they are trying to jump on the Perl Review market. I don't know. From a few comments I read here; TPJ had gotten pretty weak.

The Perl Review is pretty good so I will probably send money to them instead. ThePerlReview

There's no reason not to support them both. There's room in the community for two magazines, I think, especially if they're inexpensive enough for folks to get them with pocket cash.
I think it's a content problem, not a consumer problem. It's the CableTV dilemma. More content is better, only if the average quality of the content can be maintained. Is the reward of another outlet worth the risk of all the outlets 'cannibalizing' each other for the quality content? With this ultimately reducing the overall quality of all publications?

I'm not saying that's the way it WILL be--I'm in no position to judge the availability of the people who do/can contribute to the magazines. Perhaps with the current job market, we'll need 8 more magazines to keep everyone busy :-/

(Edit:) thelenm++ for the important announcement.

You said you wanted to be around when I made a mistake; well, this could be it, sweetheart.

Let's Do Something for TPJ
by Spenser (Friar) on Oct 02, 2002 at 23:14 UTC

After all the recent complaining we did about SysAdmin dropping TPJ insert, and all the dumping on theperljournal.com we did a few weeks ago and all the calls for us to rally behind the Perl Review, I'm surprised that CMP hasn't gotten their 3,000 subscribers already.  Sure, there weren't 3,000 people participating in those posts, but we need to be promoting this attempt at a come back.  Can't we add a permanent advertisement in the right margin or something linking users to TPJ until they hit the 3,000 mark?  Maybe CMP will give vroom a link to a subscription counter to add to the margin.  I'm too low on the XP pecking order to get something like this done, but maybe one of you Saints can pull this off.  TPJ is too important to us just to hope they make it.

That's Spenser, with an "s" like the detective.

I don't know if I'm the exception here, but honestly I miss having a real magazine rather than having an online, PDF or otherwise, version of a Perl magazine.

And yes, I realize you can print out a PDF fairly nicely, but it's just not the same without my glossy cover and decent binding! I want my flippability!

Not to mention coffee shop and bathroom portability concerns.
