in reply to wrapping and search

<RANT>
I couldn't agree more on the wrapping issue!

Nodes like Server Error Messages are very upsetting. I don't even feel like reading SOPW anymore (or the homenode for that matter) because these long unbreaked strings are really getting on my nerves! In the case of the node I just mentioned it was just plain HTML in his script that was going way too far! (and he even used "Comic Sans MS" in his font tags, which is a total waste of font formatting, but that's an entirely different topic)

Why can't people use the <CODE> tags politely?? Is it too much too ask? Is it just ignorance? There is a preview button, so ignorance shouldn't be an excuse!

I think it was merlyn that brought it up when this issue was posted before, saying that users should know when to break their code, but I haven't seen one single good use of long strings since I've been around. Maybe I'm being totally radical on this one, but if I had moderating delete previledges, I would have deleted that node instead of approving it.

Sorry if I'm being rude, but I really had to get this one off my chest.

RE:(2) wrapping (moderator edit privilege?)

    Perhaps a "Moderation/Edit" ability for high-level monks?

    I agree about the nastiness of horizontal scrolling. Many a time have I wanted to just add a few (obvious-but-missing) newlines to a post. Only high-level monks would be allowed to do such a thing (and perhaps there should be a non-suppressible message added when a post is edited).

    Kinda scary, but it would greatly improve the aesthetics of the site in certain instances...

    P.S. Since merlyn is right (that only perl can correctly parse perl), this will most likely require human intervention.

    The only moderation privileges are Frontpage and OK. The first approves a posting to appear in The Monastery Gates and the second approves it only to appear on the front page of the appropriate section (ie, Seekers of Perl Wisdom).

    Everything's available on Newest Nodes, which is probably where higher level monks look, judging from the response times.

    vroom's told those of us with that Power not to approve posts that need editing -- he'll take care of it. It would be nice to have another moderation option, perhaps Beautify. You could also make an Editor Request.
