If you are wanting to handle all the communications yourself, check out IO::Socket.

I'd recommend using Net::FTP if you are writting a _real_ program, but if you are just having fun then you might learn more by rolling your own.

    Check out TCP/IP Illustrated by Stevens. I used that and a sniffer to write a simple telnet client, (but like Aighearach said, use Net::FTP or Net::Telnet if you are doing a real program).
