Not only that, but using read is faster!

Well, suppose it is, or something is. If the self-documenting-name function was used, then it could be changed in one place.

    Which, incidentally, illustrates tye's point: the croak "$filename: $!" used in that node is a less complete error message than the diamond operator produces..
