matth has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi, I am having problems with the CPAN shell. I have followed the advice of : http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/Networks/Installing_and_Using_CPAN.html The o conf command shows me the CPAN home as :
cpan_home /home/name/.cpan
and the make_arg as:
make_arg
ie. nothing. I have tried the following commands to change this situation.:
cpan> makepl_arg PREFIX=/home/name/.cpan/ Unknown command 'makepl_arg'. Type ? for help. cpan> makepl_arg: PREFIX=/home/name/.cpan/ Unknown command 'makepl_arg:'. Type ? for help. cpan> makepl_arg: LIB=/home/name/.cpan/ Unknown command 'makepl_arg:'. Type ? for help.
But with no luck. I get the message:
Unknown command 'makepl_arg:'. Type ? for help.
Any advice would be welcome? Do I have to re-install CPAN. If so, how do I do that?

The answer lies within the question :)

    Type ? for help.
    cpan> ? ... o conf [opt] set and query options cpan> o conf makepl_arg PREFIX=/home/name/.cpan/ cpan>
