ActiveState's download page now offers the choice of 5.8.0 (build 804) alongside version 5.6.1 (build 633). The files are dated the second of December. The beta version was build 802 sometime in November. (The link above actually goes to the registration page before the download page).

Their ppm repository shows 4054 modules available. Release notes are here.

Why the question mark? I can't find any "official" announcement.

Enjoy!

I ran across the same information you did. The biggest hint that 5.8.0 (build 804) is no longer in beta is the announcement of the release of PDK 5.0 with ActivePerl 5.8 support. My guess is that when 5.6.1 gets removed an announcement will be made regarding 5.8.0.

Update: Still no "offical" announcement by ActiveState, but there are release notes for 5.8.0 here
