Some of the best obfuscations of all time (IMHO) are found here at perlmonks. Check out erudil's posts: camel code, How to (ab)use substr and find-a-func to start. Top that off with 3-D Stereogram, Self replicating source.. Finally, if that's not enough, try a little spiraling quine. Not only are these great examples, they are some of the highest-reputation nodes of all time!

I'm not suggesting you start at this level, but this gives you an idea of what can be accomplished. If you are looking for a place to begin, don't start with these ;^) Try writing highly obfuscated code in perl for a quick primer.
