The search box at the top of each page isn't very useful for finding material by subject matter as it only searches titles (perhaps it should be called "find" instead? -- gee, this fact isn't clearly noted at all, is it?).

Yep, the search box is what I used. I sometimes use Super Search if I want to find something in a particular section. I never knew that the searches worked differently.

I suggest you add a disclaimer to the title search.
