Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I'm looking to create simple images with perl by combining/layering pngs and throwing some text on top. Unfortunately, GD.pm refuses to install, I can't get newer versions of GD to make with png/etc support, blech blech.

Are there any other perl modules or methods to perform this manipulation?

Thanks

    Image::Magick is a possible alternative.

    It would be useful to know why GD.pm refuses to install. For instance, if it refuses to install because you're missing libpng, you're probably SOL until you install libpng.

    Does it have to be PNG? PNG is a nasty format to work with -- thank goodness they have a nice reference library for us to use. If you use 32-bit TGAs, you can avoid all this library nonsense and munge pixels by hand, the hard fun way. :-) Targa's a really nice format for image manipulation. Have a look at it on Wotsit.

    Imager is nice. Check it out on CPAN.

      I'd like to try Imager.

      1. Is there a repository to which I can point ActivePerl's PPM to get a .ppd package?
      2. If not, is there at least a tarball or zip of all the module files (since it appears to be a pure-perl collection of modules)?

      Update: please disregard this post. I found the tarball in CPAN.
