Many people noticed, in various forms, the "free and frank exchange of opinion" among various monks, myself included.

What started the argument, why it continued for so long, who was right and wrong... doesn't matter. I won't try and explain it, or justify it, or condone it.

Instead, I have only one thing to say; I am sorry. I would like to apologize to Aighearach, and to all of you; Aighearach for my tone and actions, and all of you for wasting valuable time and bandwidth.

Another Monk's Apology
by BBQ (Curate) on Jul 22, 2000 at 19:33 UTC
    Well put Ozy:

Today I woke up and went straight for the computer with exactly the same thought in mind. Especially because I feel very responsible about the entire thread, having started it. The last thing I would wanted to see on perlmonks is a series of "Slashdot flame wars" going on, and I feel extremely guilty for having started one. You beat me to it Ozy, but I shall make yours my words:

I appologize again to Aighearach (I've memorized the spelling of your nick now, dude), and everyone. I was way out of line and should have noticed before I started.

Aighearach says I do not understand why I should be attacked publicly, and expected to consider an appology privately. It does not leave anything for me to believe.

Trust me when I say that if I could make this appology more public than this, I would...

The Tao

    Hi Guys (and Gals),

Well I don't have a lot of time, so I'll try to be brief here. First, I'd like to say I really enjoyed reading that Deep Linkage thread. Second, I would like to also say that I voted ++ on as many of the posts I could. However I ran out about half way through.

I voted ++ for two reasons. One, most importantly, everyone was revealing their opinions on an interesting subject. While it might not have been perl related, it is definately representative of a perlmonk, in my opinion. That is, I think that we all embrace perl as a language because it gives us freedoms of sorts, and this thread I just read was all about some of those freedoms. The second reason is of course, I wanted to know what the rep's were for all the posts, so I could see how everone else voted. :)

For the main players involved I'd like to say somethings (but please, please, try not take these comments as attacks, but rather as my view on things).

For BBQ, I'd like to say I agree with your view that people should try not to take things too seriously, when they shouldn't be. For Aighearch, I'd like to say that I agree strongly about your request to have your picture link modified. Responding to people's polite requests is very important in my opinion. To jcwren, I'd like to say, that while you do own the stats page fully, I would have to side and agree with Aighearch when it comes to his request concerning his picture. As a compromise (if this wasn't already mentioned some place else -- I'm sorry I haven't had time to read everything lately), perhaps your stat's page could include links to the homenode very near the location for the link to the picture?

Anyway, didn't want to start a riot, but I did want to voice that I liked the thread, and didn't want you all to think you were perlmonk-sinners for starting it! :) (at least not in my book).

May the tao flow through you all,
    Gryn
