to be used with this text:

TARKIN: The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.
TAGGE: That's impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?
TARKIN: The regional governors now have direct control over territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.

    Were I a teacher, I should be happy that students were trying to apply the wisdom of the classics to the modern world.

    But I'm not a teacher and the poster should have used a HEREDOC or __DATA__ section for the text.

    Ignoring everything else, this won't even compile. Check:
    s/TARKIN/WOLFOWITZ; s/TAGGE/POWELL;
    are clearly in need of closing slashes.

    There is nothing special about this code. It is a just a political statement and not a very enlightening one at that. This section is not about political statements, it's about Perl (albeit a strange use for Perl). While deleting posts is a very slippery route if you're going to do it, this is as good as any.

      This is true, but just because you don't agree with his message doesn't mean it should be reaped. Perl is for perl, poetry comments on whatever the poet wishes. Though I don't consider the merit of this particular code high, it's still poetry in perl (even though it doesn't compile :-/)

    As troubled as I am about American foreign policy, this sort of inflamatory rhetoric, posted anonymously no less, really doesn't belong here.

        I can think of many, many possible subjects of poetry that would be reaped immediately, so the observation that it's supposed to be poetic gives very little solid justification for this kind of thing. If the poem in some way reflected the complexity of current world events (or perhaps if it were more interesting code) then I could see its worth, however, a simple-minded comparison of the US to "the Empire" is nothing but a troll, and we've seen quite enough of those recently.
