If you are a certain level or above, you can approve posts and mark them as "frontpage" and/or "ok". I've noticed that sometimes a post is not on the frontpage, but is also not in the list of posts waiting to be approved. I've also noticed that if I mark a post as "ok" *OR* as "frontpage" that it no longer shows up in the list. Is this what is happening here, or is it me? Is this a desired feature, or should there always be a way for a moderator to move it to the frontpage?

You might have noticed a lag between approving something on the frontpage and it appearing there. The frontpage is regenerated once every three minutes now I believe. In the future I'll probably update the code so when an item is approved for the frontpage it invalidates the cache.

I could be misunderstanding your point. If so, please forgive...

The 'OK' button approves the post to appear in the section itself. Until 'OK' is checked, it will only be visible

    • from Newest Nodes
    • if you have elected to see unmoderated content
    • in 'Unapproved Questions (etc.)' if you are a moderator
Checking FrontPage should approve the post to appear in the section and also put it on 'The Monastery Gates.'

I must admit, I have never tried to just check FrontPage without also checking 'OK.' Is that what you have found?

I've also just learned that I cannot edit my previous post, for some reason. I dug a little, and the closest mention I can find is at How to use the moderation system (if you're level 6) which almost answers my question, but not quite. It should act as two checkboxes instead of a one-time radio...

Allow me to elaborate - I have never seen a post that has already been approved as "ok", or has already been approved for "frontpage" but not the other. Perhaps it is a caching issue. I'd like to test it out this morning, but there are no new posts. :) As to why mark one and not the other, I mark it as "ok" if the post is a) formatted mostly correctly, b) on-topic and c) not previously asked. For the frontpage, I also throw in the condition that it be relatively short. I just don't like adding 200+ lines to the frontpage. I know that there is no "show only first X lines of the post" feature yet, so *someone* will have to approve it for the frontpage. :) That's why I would vote something ok and not frontpage. I can't think of a reason why I would do it the other way around, however... if it is good enough for the frontpage, it is certainly ok for the section.
