Auto-open ARGV

diotalevi has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I'd like to be able to write perl -MStorable=fd_retrieve -e 'print +(fd_retrieve \*ARGV)->foo' filename except that ARGV doesn't open unless <> is touched once. I was thinking it'd be nice to be able to do something <>-like except with the handle reference instead. So am I just out of luck here?

Thats nice - I was hoping to get the STDIN or @ARGV behaviour though. I thought that was apparent from wanting to get `<>` behaviour. Seeking Green geeks in Minnesota	[reply] [d/l]

`perl -MStorable=retrieve -e '@ARGV = "-" unless @ARGV; print +(retriev +e $_)->foo for @ARGV' filename` [download] You really really don't want `<>`, because it intends to read a line from the file.
