Sometimes I wonder how popular a particular module is. How many times a module is downloaded from cpan or one of its mirrors would suggest how popular a module is. I know some people could download a module and never use it or delete it right away. So download stats are not the best indicator of popularity, but I was wondering how difficult would it be to set up a mechinism by which one could record how many times a module has been downloaded from a mirror? Is this already being done anywhere?

Take a look at CPANSTATS which is a start at gathering the sort of information you're interested in.

Gathering download information would need co-operation from all the mirrors - so I wouldn't think it's likely to happen. They already do enough for free :-)
