If all you want to do is detect a trailing slash and remove it if present, you could do
chop($served) if substr($served,-1) eq '/';
Which I think is a bit clearer of your intent than the regex.
Examine what is said, not who speaks.
1) When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
