I have IE 5.5 and have logged in with the checkbox that says to remember who I am. When I go to any other link or area within perlmonks (other than my personal site), the web pages I get show that I am no longer logged in and shows the login "box" on the upper right.

Is this me or is it the sight? Anyone else have this problem?

Be sure you have things configured so you can accept cookies from PerlMonks. The problem can be either "Security" or "Privacy" options. The "Privacy" settings are pretty clear. Security settings are anything but clear.

PerlMonks must not be in "Restricted Sites". PerlMonks must be in a security zone that is configured to allow cookies (I think in IE 5.5, "User data persistence" had to be enabled for cookies to work).

Certainly IE 6.x has problems where changes to security/privacy can cause it to misbehave until it is restarted. So, after you verify/change all of the above settings, be sure to close all instances of IE and then try again.

While you are at it, you should also make sure that IE won't run JavaScript from PerlMonks. Otherwise you have a small chance of running into malicious JavaScript that could be inconvenient or potentially steal your PM password. You are only at risk for running JavaScript when visiting home nodes (we'll plug that hole soon I think) or when clicking on links without paying attention.

    Good luck.

    One possible cause.

If the URL you are following is .com and your are coming from .org or vice versa then the cookie is not sent by your browser. For example, if you are on www.perlmonks.org and a link has www.perlmonks.com then your browser will not send the cookie and you will get the login screen. The [id://] type links don't have this problem.

    Thanks for the replies.

I checked the settings in IE and found that, as I had expected, cookies ARE enabled for all sites and that should not be the problem.

I have done some more testing and found that if I go to the perlmonks.org site then all of the links across the top and any hyperlink on any web page causes me to be "logged off" when I get to the next page.

If I go to perlmonks.com, then I do not have this problem. I stay logged in as expected.

    Any ideas why?

    Ed

Sounds to me like IE is configured to accept cookies from perlmonks.com but is configured to reject cookies from perlmonks.org. It can be quite difficult to determine why that is the case.

I have same problem, and every time I have to login when I am using Internet Explorer. That's not the case for Mozilla. Site change is not a problem, since it happen all the time and I am not doing alternative site changes especially when perlmonks.org is bookmarked.

    *I have IE 5.5...*

Well, there's your problem right there :)

Seriously though, it's probably time to get a new browser. I have IE4/5/6 purely for testing layout purposes, but for *browsing*, (and without wanting to get all slashdot on you) I find all these new-fangled modern browsers much more stable, useful and user-friendly. They don't have any perlmonks cookie problems either :).
