Maybe this isn't very helpful, but if I type:

c:\>ver
[download]

I get:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
[download]

Unfortunately, I only have access to XP Home Edition (yuk!) here, so I can't tell if this way of getting the os version is any different than the others.
