cyberconte has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Fellow Monks,

I'm writing a backup utility that will get the checksum of all files before writing them to tape. I have the checksum part completed, however i have run into a problem with symlinks.

I would like to open the symlink *itself*, not the file it points to, and get the checksum of that, and eventually write the symlink itself (again, not the file pointed to) to tape.

I've been searching for an answer to this, but bear no fruit. Can anyone tell me how to open a symlink to get a checksum from it? Am i missing something obvious?
