Just for future reference, you can mix quotation mark styles on the command line, eliminating the escapes.

$ perl -e "-d (\"/tmp\") and print \"aack\n\""
[download]

becomes

$ perl -e '-d ("/tmp") and print "aack\n"'
[download]
