My best guess is that you (or your isp) are using a proxy. Read the section of the pod for LWP::UserAgent on the $ua->proxy(...) method.

Examine what is said, not who speaks.

    I'm at work and we do use a proxy server.

    That'll teach me to play with personal code from work. And, of course, it goes without saying that I should quit trying to skip the RTFM stage of my personal Perl development...*sigh*
