I'm pretty new to the site, and this looked kind of fun. I thought I'd give it a try.
Any comments?
BTW, this will not run
Inspired by a 'most likely' Emerson verse.
<CODE> #-- Begin Emerson, Ralph Waldo #To laugh often and much; #to win the respect of intelligent people # and the affection of children; #to earn the appreciation of honest critics # and endure the betrayal of false friends; #to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; #to leave the world a bit better, # whether by a healthy child, # a garden patch # or a redeemed social condition; #to know even one life has breathed easier # because you have lived. #This is to have succeeded. # #-- End Emerson use Life; $succeeded = 1; $life = new LIFE; $life->begin(1); sub win { $dbhost = 'worldhost'; $dbuser = 'me'; $dbname = 'everybody'; $dbpass = 'succeed'; $count = 0; $dbh = DBI->connect("DBI:mysql:$dbname:$dbhost", $dbuser, $dbpass) or return 0; $query = "SELECT id FROM people WHERE type = 'child' OR type = 'intelligent' LEFT JOIN relationship ON people.id = relationship.id AND (relationship.won = 'affection' OR relationship.won = 'respect')"; $sth = $dbh->prepare($query) or return 0; $sth->execute or return 0; while (@row = $sth->fetchrow_array) { $count++; } $dbh->disconnect; return $count; }

    I like it but I have to ask:
    Why have you chosen to use a false value to signify sucess?
      I actually did consider that; your question is valid.

      I did that so $life would equal 0 in the end.

      Thanks for your reply...this is my first Perl poem. I'm glad you liked it. :-)

        Nice reasoning.
