in thread Cannot Copy and Rename file

I downvoted your response because of its rather abrupt and demanding tone.

cciulla quite clearly means that your line:

my $newname = rename ($file, $mrn);
is assigning a Boolean-like true/false value to $newname rather than the value you seem to expect.

Check out rename for information on how to use this properly

    People with limited skills in a foreign language often phrase things in an unfortunate manner. skyler is clearly not a native speaker of English. His/her short, abrupt sentences reflect incomplete mastery of English sentence structure and verb modes. They may also reflect cultural values. (Rauchen verboten 'smoking forbidden', as opposed to Prier de ne pas fumer 'you are requested to not smoke'.)

    That said, he might learn something from your response and be more careful in the future. I had the same thought as you did before it occurred to me that his terseness was probably unintentional. Clearly, we're not the only ones who felt that way.

    Oh, and another, more minor thing: It's cool that you give reasons for downvoting. =)

      You're absolutely right in what you say, and I will try to use my down votes in a kinder, gentler way in future.

      Thanks also for the recognition of my downvote statement - I have decided to do this every time I use a downvote. I feel it is the bold and right thing to do, and doesn't 'alf help me to be sparing with them!! :)
