RockyRR has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I don't know Perl....those are my beginning qualifications. But, I am using a Perl script written by someone else. I'd like to add some code to display a web page or two, including graphics. Where can I find some basic instructions/guidelines (possibly with examples) that can help me? Thanks, Rocky

The monastery has a good number of Tutorials here and there's always Ovid's excellent tutorial, I guess it's really a matter of how much you want to learn and how much time you have. There are many good books out there, try CGI Programming with Perl, or Learning Perl, both from O'Reilly

Hopefully there will be a witty sig here at some point

    The affliction:
I started lurking at PM a few months ago for much the same reason as you describe. Result? Too many hours spent reading as much as I can about the language, odd looks from the wife as my bedtime reading became the Llama and other such tomes, and generally too much time spent on Perl Monks

    The symptoms:
Patient's moods swing between elation when a particularly annoying problem finally gets swatted to deep depression as he goes to yet another recommended module and can't get further than the title (and sometimes has a problem even with that!!)

    The cure:
Finally turning that page in some book out there which allows me to know as much as Mr. Muskrat

    The lesson:
Avoiding the above is quite simple - forget the script and go fishing instead. However my advice is to study the tutorials already recommended, ease yourself into perl and if you like it then I promise you you won't look back...

Apologies: for being off topic and probably not helpful - some nodes just create a little spark somewhere...

I don't know if it pays to learn Perl just to modify one script. Anyhow, if you do, the language will prove to be useful in many other circumstances probably.

The resources are many: look at the tutorials here on PerlMonks, and browse http://www.perl.com. If you need books, you can find some excellent ones here. If you like to contact other Perl coders in your area, then visit http://www.pm.org.

    Hope this helps!

    Michele.
