perl 5.008 adds a new stream processing engine, PerlIO. you can define your own layers, too. see PerlIO::via:: for some existing modules.

        Doh! I stand corrected. Normally when I see people talking about perl version I see it refered to in the manner of perl -v
        I was thinking that the poster was implying that it was added in an old perl ala 5.00X
