A common problem we see with people new to Perlmonks are double posts because their question does not show up immediately, neither on the front page nor in the section where they posted their question.

This is because many people don't know about the Show Unmoderated Content option in their user settings.

The most obvious fix in my eyes would be to always show the users their own root nodes in a section, as the users won't be offended by their own posts most likely. This would also alleviate the confusion about posts not showing up.

Of course, this again means some code changes that our fearless leader would have to implement ...

Another solution would be to modify the post page to include an explaining message like :
Your post will not show up immediately. Please be patient until a monk of the administration has approved your post for general consumption. While you wait, have a look at the brochures.
if the poster does not have the Show Unmoderated Content option set.

This is not the most elegant solution, but it requires considerably less changes in the code :-)

I like your first idea, but if fearless leader were to go with the second, I wouldn't want to make the user feel judged. Perhaps a kindler-gentler message could be displayed, like, "You post is very important to us, it will be handled in the order that they are received", or maybe, "Thanks for posting to Perl Monks... your node will created shortly."

By the way, as a monk who gets the moderation box for new nodes, I can only place a node on the gates and or in its categorized page. Its still visable on the newest nodes page, and I can't delete it. I can't mark it with something telling other moderators that I looked at it and didn't think it gate worthy. This means that as a 'moderator' there isn't really much that I can do. It only takes one moderator to think a post is gate worthy for it to be posted to the gates. You see?

<RANT>Sometimes I wish I could update my root nodes or at least append stuff ... But on the other side, I'm already doing that :)</RANT>

Adams concerns are of course valid, and the message I posted as an example was just that, an example :-).

I didn't know that unmoderated content shows in the newest nodes if you donīt want to see unmoderated content, but as many people don't use the Newest Nodes at all (for good reasons surely), and the problem mostly happens with people new to the monastery, that don't know their way around yet, I think that the Newest Nodes would be insufficient to make the user feel that his/her request has been posted to the monastery.

Personally, I still think that seeing is better than believing and showing users their post immediately would be much more relieve them of their pain that their burning question might not be seen by the general public...
