Has there been any discussion on making the strict pragma mandatory?
A related note is under the BUGS section of the perl manpage:
BUGS The -w switch is not mandatory.
The same might be said for strict. The answer, though, is that it just gets in the way for simple-under 10 line type scripts, and perl is equally good at short scripts and long programs. And depending on the needs of your program (i.e. if you are TheDamian), it might even get in the way on longer things.

    This came up in another node recently. There, I wrote about what I think you should do when you need to break strictness. Of course, that was in the context of a program, not a script. Insert your definition of program vs script here :-)
