Maybe there's been a discussion here and I've missed it. I'm not sure if I'm meditating or seeking wisdom on this one but ...

What exactly is the point of Acme::Current?

On a superficial level I guess I can answer that myself: it returns today's date - for some loose definition of 'today' that doesn't fit with my timezone and is unlikely to be compatible with your CPAN mirror's sync schedule.

On a deeper level, I'm still struggling to see the point. It's not unknown in these hallowed halls for people to be accused of wasting space on CPAN but surely setting up a cron job to upload a new version of a module every day is doing exactly that?

Ahh here's a theory ... some script kiddie has hacked merlyn's PAUSE account and is taunting him daily.

    I suggest merlyn also automate scheduling old copies for deletion, otherwise this will be uncool (yes, ACME:: is for fun and games, but this is just plain stupid), and if the maintainers of cpan complain, well then he should definetly cease and desist (I've got a sense of humor, but there is no perpetual joke which is still funny).

    I run a Win32 PPM repository for perl 5.6.x and 5.8.x -- I take requests (README).

    I find the idea and concept a bit funny, maybe because I know such solutions from daily production life. I already mentioned Acme::SoftwareUpdate as an interesting addition to this module, and using that module demonstrates quite well the problem of vendor lock-in. Other than that, I hope the update will be stopped in a week or two, because the joke is already old to those who know it.

    perl -MHTTP::Daemon -MHTTP::Response -MLWP::Simple -e ' ; # The $d = new HTTP::Daemon and fork and getprint $d->url and exit;#spider ($c = $d->accept())->get_request(); $c->send_response( new #in the HTTP::Response(200,$_,$_,qq(Just another Perl hacker\n))); ' # web

    I am flabbergasted over the fact that Acme::Current is merlyn's only module on CPAN.

    BTW, XML::Simpler was much funnier, IMHO.

      I'm not, dig a little deeper, you'll find that there are tonnes of the core developers and multiple (as in 10+) major module authors who get little to no credit while supposed "big names" are highly praised all around.

      Randal has done lots of good work (and probably a lot more I don't know of) but there are many who have contributed equally (or more) who you wouldn't recognize at all.

    It seems xkcd has taken the idea of this module, and calls it PermaCal.

    Incidentally, has there ever been a version of that module that you don't have to download every day, but you still have to rebuild and reinstall every day, because the date is hard-coded into the module at build time? That would preserve some of the joke of the module without "wasting space on CPAN".
