Ha!
I knew chromatic would die from so many blueberry snow cones!
It seems that crazyinsomniac killed chromatic and chromatic took the chatterbox with him.
If this is gone by the time you are reading this, here is what the chatterbox froze like for quite a while:

<chromatic> Okay, if you folks are going to keep voting me up, I'll just have to keep making informative and useful posts. Is that what you want?!
<jcwren> Not really...
<jcwren> (j/k)
<jeorgen> I have a question about control chars...
<jeorgen> if anyone is listening...
<jeorgen> I get this error message: Unrecognized character \003 at rap line 552
<jeorgen> and the line looks like this:
<jeorgen> ((!$key1) && ($key[0] eq "^C"))
crazyinsomniac fed chromatic a blueberry scone
crazyinsomniac fed chromatic a blueberry scone

At this same time, eduardo, SuperCruncher, and crazyinsomniac were apparently logged on.
Thought this was kind of funny, but also annoying, since I couldn't chatter!

It appears that the clock is broken somehow, perhaps in MySQL. My votes have refreshed (they were at 30 but are back to 40) and last login times displayed on homenodes are negative, in some cases.

Or the clock got set behind -- the datestamp for this writeup makes it appear to have been posted *before* two nodes I actually posted this morning. There's the culprit.

... Also, there seems to be some problems with clearing the newest nodes page. Some of the posts won't go away. Probably the same error (the broken clock) that causes it.

    Hi,

    crazyinsomniac here.
Like I always say to my friends, there's nothing i can't break with the simple click of a mouse button.
Now I don't know if I actually killed the chatbox, i just remember the 'box not working after I unintentionally fed chromatic a blueberry scone.
Here's a list of systems I unintentionally crashed with the simple click of a mouse button(as to access the file menu of some app):

    Win 9x all versions.
    WinNT 4
    Win2000
    RedHat 6.x
    FreeBSD
    SunOs
    MacOS

Apparently the box was reset on Friday. The hardware clock on the server is messed up so the time has to be set manually when this occurs. This accounts for all of the time-related problems people have been experiencing.

Ummm, like this may be a really dumb question, but why not put a cron entry in to keep the clock set?

rdate -s rolex.peachnet.edu works for me, every hour, on the hour.

      --Chris

Does rdate adjust the system clock or the hardware clock?

I understood vroom to mean that the system clock is fine (likely uses NTP client) but the underlying hardware clock drifted waaaay off.   This would only be a problem after power-cycle.

I have the same problem with a Debian box.   Sometime I'll get around to cron'ing this: hwclock --systohc, which should keep the hardware clock from drifting so far.
            cheers,
