Wouldn't it be saner to simply use print until the need arises to print to anything but STDOUT?

print "Batch Router - the batch router configurator\n";
...
print $out_FH "----------------------------------------------------\n"

That would be my thought, but I don't know what crackotter is trying to do/circumvent. As such, I assumed that he had a good reason for doing what he did.
