maxion has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Where the hell can a monger get an English dictionary as a text file or in another format (whatever it is) as open source / public domain ?

I have searched for English dictionaries everywhere yet most where obscure or simply incomplete.
http://www.translatum.gr/dictionaries/download-english.htm

This site contains an English text-file dictionary which I can strip down to a more accessable format, yet the total words in the dictionary falls way short of the English language per se.

'Public domain' English dictionaries. Surely there are more out there ?

Cheers Maxion.

There's also The Wordlist Project. It appears to have moved to http://www.gattinger.org/wordlists/.

Stumbled upon this link. It contains a smaller but still useful wordlist. About 80,000 real words, all caps, no spaces, eight letters or less. This could be very useful for simpler purposes that wouldn't require the Wordlist project's 600,000+ word list.

Well, heres a "RIDiculouslY Huge English Wordlist", which can be found at http://www.codehappy.net/wordlist.htm (scroll to the bottom for downloads). Dunno if this is exactly what you want but this should contain most of the english language..
