Hi, You may want to check out:
perldoc Net::Ping
perldoc -f gethostbyaddr
IMHO this will give you more info on more machines, as well as being more bulletproof. Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried pinging with Net::Ping inside the for loop, but it too hangs when pinging a second dead IP address. I am starting to think that this is something with the machine I am running things on. These are SunOS 5.8 Blade 100 machines with ActiveState perl v5.6.1 built for sun4-solaris-thread-multi.	[reply]
