    You mean the "=head1", "=cut" and the comments inbetween? Those are POD (Plain Old Documentation) commands. Perl ignores them. See the perlpod documentation for details.

    Here is a tip, whenever you are wondering about something perl, try `perldoc perltoc', like
    $$ perldoc perltoc |perl -ne'die $.,$/,$_ if /=head/' 6456 empty =headn, =over on line *N* without closing =back, =it +em
    Isn't it magic?
