It's trivial to check if it's a perl thing (perldoc perltoc|grep -i magic_killbackrefs, perldoc perldiag|grep -i magic_killbackrefs).

`perldoc perldiag' :

    You can also pipe the error in question through splain after the fact, or add use diagnostics to your code.
