Alatar has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

This is a very Frivolous question so I urge the more serious minded of you to skip down to the next enquiry and ignore this post!

I'm hosting a perl driven website for a group of friends and I'd like to host an Empire style game for the members. If you're unsure of what I mean by that refer to games like Earth: 2025 and Utopia. After a ridiculous amount of googling I've come no closer to finding a downloadable server for one of these games. Since a lot of these are simply database manipulation I would have expected to find a Perl based server(or at the very least a PHP version).

Does anyone here know if such a thing exists?

Thanks,
Alatar

I donīt know the games you mentoined, but iīm co-coder of a game, that could be of the type you are looking for.
too sad, itīs only in german by now, but if thats not a problem for you, you could take a look at www.outerspace-game.de.

let me know if youīre interested. giving you the code should not be a problem, even though the other coders are not so open source entuisiasts like me. but you should know that all coments and most names of variables subs etc. are in german too.
It looks interesting. How soon before you will have an english translation?
        dunno,
there is no translation planed so far, we didnīt think so many people would be interested in the game.
at the moment iīm busy coding hexagonal map graphics (using imager.pm).

maybe i will write a short note when translation is released.

I have written a very simple Perl and Javascript game. I haven't released it to the public as I have slowly been working on making it a more stand-alone program, but my friends and I play it often. Its sort of a clone of the Konquest! game you get with KDE. Each player has a planet and the object is to try to take over all the planets on the board. Each planet produces ships and has a strength used when attacking other planets. It can be quite a bit of fun.

There are bugs of course: namely at the moment its only known to work in Mozilla or Netscape. IE still doesn't follow DOM standards closely enough, though I have some ideas for working around it they haven't yet been implemented. The game might work in Opera or Konqueror but it hasn't been tested. Shell access is required on the webserver to create and games (though the script used to do this could probably be made web-based fairly easily. Thirdly only one game can be played at a time. Since its CGI based I didn't want to overload the server, porting it to mod_perl shouldn't be hard but it hasn't been done yet.

If you are interested I'll try to though it together in some kind of package and provide at least instructions on how to get it installed. Or if you like I'm sure you could come play sometime. /msg or just reply to me
